FEDERAL REGULATIONS J-1 VISA HOLDERS

Insurance Coverage

J sponsors must inform exchange visitors that they and their accompanying spouse and dependents must be covered by health and accident insurance.

The regulations require each J exchange visitor, spouse, and dependent to have coverage of $50,000 per accident or illness, coverage for repatriation  of remains of $7,500, and coverage for medical evacuation of the visitor to his or her home country of $10,000.

Under the regulations, policies must be: (1) underwritten by insurance companies that have specified ratings;

(2) backed by the full faith and credit of the visitor's home country;

(3) part of a group health benefits program offered to employees or enrolled students by a designated sponsor; or

(4) offered through or underwritten by a federally qualified health maintenance organization (HMO) or an eligible competitive medical plan (CMP) as determined by the Health Care Financing Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

If a J exchange visitor willfully fails to comply with the insurance requirements discussed above, the sponsor must terminate the participation of the visitor in the exchange program.
